Less water.
Lower energy use.

At A Working Lab, Akademiska Hus and Vyse tech are testing local water heating with lower flow rates. Ten installed units provide data on usage and the potential to reduce water and energy demand.

A calculation for the entire building indicates potential savings of 27 MWh per year with a complete replacement.

How we calculate · pipe losses and assumptions

The model assumes a complete replacement of the building's 47 washbasins, with 1.3 l/min at every washbasin. It represents future system potential, not measured annual savings from the ten pilot units, which use both 1.3 and 1.9 l/min nozzles.

The calculation assumes 600 people, three washes per person per working day, 260 days per year and 10 seconds of water flow per wash. Water volume is 429 m³ before and 101.4 m³ after. Temperatures: cold water 15 °C, mixed water 35 °C, hot water 54.5 °C. Local heat loss in the Vyse tech heater: 3%.

The previous system includes pipe cooldown, heat loss from hot-water and circulation pipes, and pump electricity. The model assumes that water in the branch pipes cools between uses and that the distribution system can be decommissioned. For the pilot's usage, the comparison excluding distribution still gives 70.5% lower energy demand.

Price assumptions in the calculation: district heat SEK 0.81/kWh · electricity SEK 0.71/kWh · water SEK 30/m³. Current tariffs need confirmation. Investment and servicing are excluded from operating savings.

Lower flow makes a difference

Lower flow reduces both water volume and the amount of water that needs heating, every time the tap is used.

Insights for more properties

The pilot tracks everyday use. More detailed session data will enable better comparisons of energy, temperature and comfort, helping inform potential installations at other properties.
